It’s no secret that full-face helmets provide better crash and weather protection than open-face helmets. However, it’s inconvenient to peel your helmet off every time you stop for a drink or need to talk to your riding partner. A modular helmet lets riders have the best of both worlds.

The chinbar on modular helmets provides most of the safety of a full-face helmet but also allows riders to flip up the chinbar when stopped for a quick chat or a smoke – wait, does anyone do that anymore? Modular helmets also allow for other conveniences like a drop-down sunshield and a Bluetooth communications system (usually optional).

To be sold in the U.S., helmets must meet safety standards set by the Department of Transportation. All the helmets on this list meet those requirements, indicated by the DOT sticker on the back, and some even meet the requirements of stricter ECE standards.

  1. Adding the head shape to the description would be helpful (round, intermediate-oval, long-oval). I have a long-oval head, and I haven’t found a modular helmet I can wear. I also noticed that several popular brands are absent from this list.

    • Well said!! It is a critical fit dynamic these reviews seldom mention. All helmet reviews should address this issue.

    • I’ve been saying for years that all helmet reviews need to list head shape fit. I have a long oval head and wear a Klim TK1200 carbon. It fits well, is comfortable, light and well made. I’ve had 4 different modulars over the years and the Klim is the only one that ticked all the boxes. An excellent helmet.

  2. Quite surprised to see no mention of the Shoei modular helmet. I had understood that the SHoei Neotec was one of the most popular modulars. FWIW, I used the Neotec for years but recently switched to the HJC i100 specifically for the ability to push the chinbar all the way to the rear and use the helmet like a 3/4 helmet. So far I am quite happy with this helmet, although it is a bit wide compared to other helmets.

  3. I’ve always worn Arai full face helmets but decided to go the modular route last summer and bought a Schuberth. It’s a good enough helmet (I still use the Arai for day rides) but I’d really like to see Arai make a modular.

  4. Maybe just list others even though they are not included in the review like aforementioned Shoei and Klim TK1200
    More importantly it would nice to know which have Double D chin strap closure and which have Quick release ratchet.

    • I completely agree and I would add that I have heard bad things about the quick release buckles opening during a crash. Track riders usually won’t use them for this reason but as consumers we need more information. How safe are they and which are more secure than others. Does the Dot test the buckle system ?

  5. I have purchased a Schuberth C5 last fall, I sometimes ride my motorcycle below freezing outside if the roads are bare. I wear a balaclava for warth and the helmet fit great. Now that I’m riding without the balaclava the helmet was too large. I contacted Schuberth Helmets USA ( I’m Canadian) and SUPER DAVE FROM ARIZONA set me straight. He gave me the correct part number for a larger inside liner and VOILA, an incredibly quiet, good fitting helmet again. If memory serves there was a round head liner, long skinny head liner as well as the larger all around liner. It’s the quietest helmet I’ve ever owned. Rob
